SILHOUETTES IN MOTION - The Great Black Migration in America

Studio/CharlesValerieStanding.jpg

SILHOUETTES IN MOTION brings to life the great Black Migration (1916-1970) from America's rural South to the 'Promised Land' of the urban/industrial North and West, by exploring the courage, frustrations, hopes and dreams of the more than 6 million African Americans that made this journey.

The 3-tiered project includes:
* assembly performances
* study guides for curriculum development and classroom
  activities
* dance workshops

All come together to create an in-depth experience for students and teachers.

In-service and teacher training are also available.

Assembly Performance
Blends dance, live music, poetry and song, archival texts and visual art inspirations to tell the stories of the Black Migration. Performed by JazzAntiqua’s musicians, dancers and actor-singers.

Study Guide
Provides an overview of the Black Migration and stimulates classroom discussions and activities based on jazz, blues and gospel music, poetry, archival texts, and visual arts examples that define aspects of the Black Migration experience. Supports grade level appropriate curriculum in Social Studies, Language Arts, Visual and Performing Arts, American History, Essay and Creative Writing.

Dance Workshop
'Creating Living Pictures' is a participatory workshop led by members of JazzAntiqua, where students explore movement as a vehicle for telling stories. Suitable for all levels of experience.

"Jazzantiqua was a joy to work with!

They provided exceptional teachers who were enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and PUNCTUAL. Pat Taylor, director, is a classroom teacher and her company demonstrates a knowledge of educational standards and
a willingness to create an assembly and workshops that are meaningful, entertaining and directly connected to core curriculum."
